Love this video! It is a very good story about Sister Damian of the Congregation of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, Houston, Texas.
Kudos to the Bill Phillips of Texas Country Reporter for presenting Sister Damian on her own terms, who she is, and how she sees the world. This is one of those rare interviews where a sister is not made into a caricature for our amusement. You really get a sense that Mr. Phillips is delighted to know Sister Damian. I’m delighted to know her too. What a great human being!
Show #993 originally aired the weekend of September 9th, 2006.

Sister Damian is delightful. I don’t know if you all have ever seen Sr. Helen Prejean speak, but she too has that kind of folksy, good-humored personality with a distinct Southern drawl. Sr. Damian reminds me of her in that sense.

Funny you should mention Sister Helen. A colleague said she was on NPR this weekend. I’ll see if I can find it. I’ve heard her speak and actually met her very briefly once. Definitely one of my heroes.

Did Sister Damian teach elementary school in Houston, Texas, Sacred Heart (grades 1st-8th) during 1945-1953? If so, she taught me.

Hi Don, I don’t know, but if so, that’s pretty cool!

Don P, She is a Sister of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament. You can find the Houston number on their website or you can just call and ask. Or just e-mail them.

I have had the great honor and gift of having this wonderful lady in my life for 40+ years. She has been such a blessing and all the wonderful memories of childhood with her and Grampa and Granda in Texas were the very best. If every child could have had this, well.. the world would be better place. Sister Damian passed on February 15, 2010 at the age of 88. Though the Astor’s never did win the big one, they always had the big one on thier side. I’m sure the up coming days will be filled with friends who will have that same smile and laugh as she did. I will always miss her but thank God for the gift of her in my life.

I just read about her death. My deepest sympathies, Diane and all who knew Sister Damian.
